Over 5500 potentially relevant journal
articles are read every year.
To accomplish this him or herself, a clinician would have to read 15
articles each and every day every year ...
If the clinician only managed to read two articles every day, after two
years, the clinician would have to have a 10-year backlog. After 20 years,
the backlog would take over 100 years to read!

Prevalence of and Intervention into Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and/or Transgender Youth Suicide in Queensland, Australia.
Lisa Thorpy, Open Doors Youth Service, Brisbane. Dionysius Reid (Transgenderzone),
Open Doors Youth Service, Brisbane. Conference paper presented on 24 July
at the Queensland Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention Conference 2008,
Cairns. Abstract Lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgendered (LGBT) youth
have high rates of incompleted and completed suicide owing to the
prejudice, discrimination and violence they endure. Male, rural and
transgendered LGBT youth are at particularly high risk of suicide. An
array of social and institutional factors in an LGBT youth’s school, home
and educational environment increase the likelihood of them completing
suicide. Strategies for reducing such factors are discussed.

Dear Colleagues, You may wish to know
about some recent additions to the website of the Gender Identity Research
and Education Society (GIRES).
* Transphobic Bullying in Schools: The British Home Office has
commissioned GIRES to develop a toolkit for schools to use in combating
transphobic bullying and provided a link to it from the Crime Reduction
section of its own website. GIRES has consulted widely in preparing this
material and has already incorporated most of the good suggestions
generated by that process into the current version of the document. The
consultation process is ongoing and GIRES will be very happy to receive
further suggestions for improving the material. There are currently two
versions of the toolkit. The first is designed for easy internet
navigability and contains hyperlinks to other material within the toolkit
and located externally. The second is an easy to print version. Like all
GIRES material, the toolkit is subject to the charity's copyright policy
(see
http://www.gires.org.uk/copyright.php). However, schools, as well as
other organisations, are specifically permitted to use it, in whole or in
part, for internal discussion and teaching. Both versions may be accessed
via:
http://www.gires.org.uk/transbullying.php
* Prevalence and Growth of Gender Variance in the UK: GIRES is
preparing a paper on this topic for publication in a peer reviewed
journal. So far, it has published the abstract and also presented its main
findings at the LGBT Health Summit in Bristol, on 4 September 2008. This
material is on view at:
http://www.gires.org.uk/prevalence.php#LBGTSummit
* Information about the Gender Recognition Panel: GIRES is keeping
track of the rate at which the Panel is issuing Gender Recognition
Certificates and the likely time that applicants (including those who have
been required to reapply) will have to wait for a decision. This data,
together with other information about the Panel is on view at:
http://www.gires.org.uk/grp.php

Participants needed for research [ONS]
If you feel able to help with this research for the ONS, please contact
Katherine directly - details below. Please note that Katherine is fully
aware of the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation. I
work for a research team at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which
is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority, anon-ministerial
department which reports directly to Parliament. ONS is the UK
Government's single largest statistical producer. We are developing a new
question about Sexual orientation that will be used on Government Social
Surveys. We are interviewing lots of different types of people and
presently we would like to discuss the question particularly with
trans people. We want to explore things like: What people understand the
question and terms used in the question to mean Your views about being
asked this question on a survey Anything said in the
interviews, which would be with one of our research staff, would be
treated confidentially and our respondents would not be identified. The
interview could be at the respondent's home or at our London office.
Everyone taking part will receive £20 (or £25 if they travel to our
office) for their assistance and time. Many thanks for your help and time.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information.
Best wishes Katherine Katherine Ralph Research Officer Room FM/781 Myddelton Street LondonEC1R 1UW Tel: 0207 014 2287

The NHS Confidentiality
campaign was set up to protect patient confidentiality and to provide a
focus for patient-led opposition the government’s NHS Care Records System.
NHS Care Records are currently being rolled out and will form a huge
national database of patient medical records and personal information
(sometimes referred to as the NHS ’spine’) with no opt-in or opt-out
mechanism for patients at all. It is very much akin to the government’s
proposed ID database. If you are interested in safeguarding your medical
records from the wider world.
